Hollywood Sign AboutWhat Is “Hollywood Progressive”?

“Hollywood Progressive” is an online publication that  includes reviews and critiques of studio, indie and foreign features, documentaries, TV programs, theatre, opera, musical recordings and performances, and book reviews, plus interviews with and articles by activist artists and reviews of restaurants and gathering places that support LA’s progressive community.  We feature coverage of “cause celebs”—of celebrity activists advocating various issues, movements, candidates, of creative community fundraisers, educationals and the like, regarding pressing political, social, cultural and economic matters.

Instead of reporting on trivial tabloid-y gossip, such as who’s sleeping with whom, or who’s wearing whose designs, this e-zine highlights art and mass entertainment of conscience and consciousness, and the artists who create it and speak out.

By shining a spotlight on Hollywood progressives and their work, “Hollywood Progressive” will help generate progressive audiences for their films, plays, TV shows, and performances, so the studios, networks, investors, and others will continue to fund left-leaning projects. This focused effort will also defend the free speech rights of dissenting talents when they come under attack by reactionary media, advocacy groups, and government. In turn, “Hollywood Progressive” will inform and energize its audience so they can evaluate the flood of cultural images washing over them with a more critical eye.

”Hollywood Progressive” incorporates still photos, video and audio, which are often provided free of charge to reviewers, and will be interactive. While the site will initially focus on Los Angeles, America’s cultural and entertainment capital, and on the “La-La-Land Left,” it will also look at art and artists elsewhere. At the same time, this site keeps an eye on the Hollywood right, on the military-industrial-entertainment-complex and points out their propaganda when we see it.

This endeavor will be independent of any political party or organization, and will be run in collaboration with L.A. Progressive (www.LAProgressive.com), a left-leaning Los Angeles-based website which receives 100,000-plus unique pageviews per month.

The three principals behind the project are Ed Rampell, Sharon Kyle, and Dick Price. Rampell, a long-time cultural reporter, author, and interviewer, will serve as Editor, responsible for the publication’s editorial direction. Kyle—the Publisher of LA Progressive, a lawyer, and financial analyst—will serve as Publisher and Webmaster. Price—Editor of the LA Progressive, a long-time magazine editor and publisher, and marketing director—will serve as Managing Editor, responsible for production, advertising, and sponsorships.
