Mark Friedman is a veteran trade union activist of the International Association of Machinists and the California Teachers Association unions. As a former marine science teacher in an inner-city LA high school he developed a program to hook inner-city Black and Latinx youth in science through unique Marine biology courses and club.
Traveling extensively throughout the world, he has collaborated with marine science educators in more than 15 countries freely distributing his entire course, and sharing resources extensively with hundreds of teachers especially in Cuba.
Currently employed by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, he helped develop curricula for onboard science education that are correlated to Ocean Literacy and new scientific protocols called Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)and Common Core (CC).
As a reporter for Random Lengths Newspaper in the harbor area, he covers environmental, labor and education through the perspective of an active socialist. Along with Brenda Lopez, he is a co-coordinator of the Los Angeles US Hands off Cuba Committee.
