LAAPFF Looking Back At The LA Uprising

Twenty Five Years After the LA Uprising. to commemorate the LA Uprising, LAAPFF 2017 invites the community to experience a weekend of events that invite RE-Imagining Community.

The 33rd Annual Asian Pacific Film Festival hosts three special conferences.

FLASHPOINT 2017: Twenty Five Years After the LA Uprising. To commemorate the LA Uprising, LAAPFF 2017 invites the community to experience a weekend of events that invite RE-Imagining Community.

Featuring: Sundance award-winning film, GOOK, directed by Justin Chon and documentary WET SAND: VOICES OF LA by Dai-Sil Kim Gibson and collaborator/cinematographer Charles Burnett, followed by a discussion: The Lessons of WET SAND and the Challenges of Re-Imagining Community.

Other panels include Sa-I-Gu: The Los Angeles Uprisings 25 Years Later- Witnessing the Past, Envisioning our Future, taking place on Friday 4/28 at UCLA. The events will include two panels featuring a discussion of the evolution of community organizing as well as the role media, particularly film, has played in creating and reflecting social change. On Saturday, the panel Media and Social Change will include Jenny Yang, Ananya Roy and Gaye Theresa Johnson.

An Art Exhibition will be on display Friday through Sunday, followed by Sunday afternoon discussion- Art Talk. LAAPFF is proud to work with ASEAC-SEARCN as a Network Partner to co-present the Los Angeles edition of the conference and related screening activities. From 2016 to 2018, the Association for Southeast Asian Cinemas (ASEAC) will extend its biennial conferences with a series of workshops designed to facilitate dialogue across critical and creative practice. Beginning with a conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2016, the Southeast Asian Cinemas Research Network (SEARCN) will bring together filmmakers, scholars, students, and the general public in events in Los Angeles, California, Hanoi, Vietnam, and Glasgow, Scotland.
