Morning Gratitude

Paul Lojeski: Thank you for having me born white in America, so I can drive down to the seven eleven for my morning coffee without being pulled over and dragged out of my car by a red-nosed cop

Everyday when I wake,
throw back the covers
and get out of bed
I stand still and quiet
for a moment, offering
my daily prayer of
gratitude: thank you
dear earth and wondrous
sun, thank you gracious
solar system and grand
Milky Way and thank
you your majesty,
limitless and all-powerful
cosmic mystery; thank
you for having me
born white in America,
so I can drive down
to the seven eleven
for my morning coffee
without being pulled
over and dragged out
of my car by a red-
nosed cop and shot
twice in the head
at point blank range
because I was a black
man because I was
a black woman because
I was a black man
in white America.
Thank you, amen.
