Good Luck in a Bad Place
He’d wake in the middle of the night to see Larry
doing chin-ups off the cell bars.
During the day they sat at metal tables, smoking
and playing cards.
Or he’d watch him pace back and forth, punching
air like a boxer warming up before a fight.
Later, on a beach, a child touched his face and a choir

of good but, as far as he could

Rainbow
Driving through Arizona
we spent the night
in an abandoned Hogan.
Sitting cross-legged
on ancient ground, we
stared at the sunset
blazing in light drizzle
and the bold rainbow
straddling red spires
like a mythic spirit,
the one they also saw,
riding brave ponies fast
and true across the valley,
long before the criminals
came.
