Living Here • But for the Children

Paul Lojeski: Once more I begin to crawl towards a house in the distance, a house already in flames.
Living Here

Living Here

I live on the border
between the Country
of Anger and the
Kingdom of Rage.
Standing in the ferocious
wind is unbearable,
while it weeps all day
long. At night the screams
of the Unseen embrace
the hearts of the Hidden.
Each morning there is
a brief lull in the cataclysm,
a few seconds to blink
at a blinding sun and pray
to the blue sky. But then
as quickly as it came,
it's gone and the rank
ground again trembles
in fear. Once more
I begin to crawl towards
a house in the distance,
a house already in flames.

But for the Children

No innocents dwell in this meat house,
scratching at air, all tributes paid
to grease the hot chamber, to
fire the deadly lead.
