A Simone Biles Ballad for Trumpian Times

Walter G. Moss: From running or standing she springs in the air In ways that few gymnasts ever would dare. Forward or backward her twists and somersaults, Executed from balance beams or in her vaults.

Listen, good people, and you shall hear
A story of old that will gladden your ear,
The Tale of Barnaby, who was, they say,
The finest tumbler of his day.

In every town great crowds he drew,
And all men marvelled to see him do
The French Vault, the Vault of Champagne,
The Vault of Metz, and the Vault of Lorraine.

His eyes were blue, his figure was trim,
He liked the girls and the girls liked him . . .”

Thus Auden’s delightful poem “The Ballad of Barnaby” does begin,
Telling of a man wishing to turn from sin.
“Tumbling is all I have learnt to do;
Mother-of-God, let me tumble for You.”

These words he does say
As a monk observes who’s hidden away.
“Watching him leap and vault and tumble,
He thought, ‘This man is holy and humble.’”

From running or standing she springs in the air In ways that few gymnasts ever would dare. Forward or backward her twists and somersaults, Executed from balance beams or in her vaults.

Think of “leap and vault” today
And it’s Simone Biles who’s on display.
Only 100 pounds or so in weight,
She stands a mere 4’8”.

From running or standing she springs in the air
In ways that few gymnasts ever would dare.
Forward or backward her twists and somersaults,
Executed from balance beams or in her vaults.

Google a video of her perform and smile,
Just sit back and ooh and aah for a while.
It’s time, oh is it ever, to enjoy some relief
From the god-awful antics of our commander-in-chief.

For she is everything he does not seem
And a fine example of the American Dream.
His youth was amidst great wealth and ease;
The mother who adopted her was born in Belize.

Central American immigrants he desires not,
And if illegal he hopes they’re caught.
To keep them out and all
His solution is to build a great wall.

While she to church often goes and prays,
He exploits religion in immoral ways.
She was once sexually abused by a doctor named Nassar;
Trump stands accused as a sexual predator.

She works hard for her U.S. team;
He’s a narcissist cruel and mean.
She has self-discipline and a smiling face,
He’s usually scowling and a national disgrace.

Yes, in our lives we all need delight,
And watching Biles seems about right
While we block out, if just for a while,
All that is Trumpian, all that is vile.
