A Violence Called God

No just God would stand for what
they did, the President railed after
the latest foul and grotesque, God-
inspired murder by beheading

of an American in the Middle
East. Implying, of course, that
his God is a just God standing
high on the sweet-scented hill

blessing everlastingly the American
slaughter, the searing and singing
and tearing apart of hundreds of
thousands of Iraqis, untold

and will never be told brutish
killings in dark, empty places like
Afghanistan, Libya and Yemen,
to say nothing of feeding Israel’s

butchery, while its mighty God
strides across the stars and planets,
swinging his blood-drenched fists.
But we’re down to the evil nub

of everything now: how the American
and Israeli Gods are the true and real
Gods, creators of day and night, love
and death. So all other Gods must

be by simply being other than these
two Gods; illegitimate, false gods
due contempt, scorn and banishment
and that that is reason enough to

commit not atrocities, not crimes
against humanity, but righteous acts
of retribution and justice against them
and their believers. For violence

levied in the name of a just God
by the very nature of its source can
be but only a just violence, a moral
violence, a violence to worship.

In the Nature of Things

Cops killed another
black man today,
a son, father
or brother.

Normal as rain
falling out
of a rough sky,

as wind rousing
mountainous
clouds to move,

as tides shifting
from the moon’s
soft touch,

as sun chases night
away every day,
as justice looks
the other way.

Cops murdered
another black
man today,
a friend, lover
or patriot.

As normal as
murder gets
in america,
in this desert
called democracy.

Ice Bucket Bullshit

Oh, how I long to feel
good about myself,
to show I am not but
a selfish, cowardly
prick completely
devoid of compassion
and the desire to help
those less fortunate
than my badass self.
So here cruel world
full of awful, anti-me
sentiment; look, look
at what a generous
and benevolent soul
I am and in turn, my
country Tis of Thee,
America is! Thus
I dumped a bucket
of ice water over my
head to cleanse me
of sin, to redeem myself
in the Maker’s eyes for
stealing and poisoning
most of the world’s water
supply, while rampaging
across the globe like a
deranged beast. And
I taped it and sent it
to the local TV station,
uploaded it to Youtube
and posted it on my
LinkedIn site, so my
clients and potential
clients can see what
a hell’ve a swell human
being I am. Oh, I feel
so, so much damn better.
I’m going to the country
club and play eighteen
and drink that splendid
Fiji water the caddies
carry, which I now
know I so richly deserve.
