Casino Movies to See You Through Lockdown

As lockdown restrictions still remain in place for many of us, turning to different forms of entertainment has provided a nice relief from the tough news cycle of the past few months - but as brick and mortar locations close, many have been turning to different forms of casinos to stay busy - mobile gaming as a whole has seen a huge surge in traffic with casinos being at the centre of that and despite initiatives within the UK to prevent access for some, many of these casinos don’t participate in the gamstop scheme. It seems that across Europe and the US, however, lockdown measures are being eased, perhaps even over this coming weekend - so for those who’d like to give their thumbs a rest, how about a casino movie to relax to?

Casino Movies
  • Casino - A classic De Niro movie from the mid-90s, the movie shows a golden age of Vegas in which a casino exec and a mafia enforcer compete over money, power and the starring lady in Sharon Stone. Despite the release date the movie holds up to the test of time and despite glorifying some of the worst parts of an early Vegas, it remains a fan favourite by being open and honest for what many believed to be true at the time.
  • The Gambler - A remake of a 1974 film, the 2014 version casts Mark Wahlberg as a problem gambler trying to balance the habit which has him risking his life for a bet and his working life as a professor. Although not a traditional casino movie, it shows more of an underground approach and the seedy side of gambling and how it can impact the lives of those not involved - it didn’t perform too well at the box office, making back just a little over the budget, but has since become a fan favourite for many.

  • The Ocean's Trilogy - The classic trilogy of heist movies that have performed very well since the initial release in 2001 - the first has front runners George Clooney and Brad Pitt devise an elaborate casino heist in an effort to get some revenge on the casino owner who was now shacked up with Danny Oceans wife. The second grows on this base - the heist team are eventually caught up to and given an ultimatum to pay back the full amount plus interest as a competing thief tries to prove he is better than the oceans team together. The third brings in a new adversary as Al Pacino stars as a new casino owner who scams one of the oceans crew out of a lot of money - they plan another elaborate heist with appearances from antagonists from both the first and second film working against them. The ocean’s trilogy has become a popular classic in the casino movie genre as it shows a fun and exciting take on conducting a casino heist with a lot of comedy mixed in the middle.

It may not be long before many of us return to work, this could be the last period of free time where many of us are able to relax and have fun - now may be the best time to make the most of it!
